With the cooler breezes blowing in, many of us are dreaming of wool socks and hot cider, which makes now the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe and deck out your home for fall. As each season arrives, it’s nice to bring in a few new pieces to keep things current, so here’s what I’ve got my eye out for this year…

We all know that as sweater weather sets in, layering becomes the best way to stay both warm and stylish. To avoid feeling drab in a shape-less sweater and plain jeans, I like to look online for inspiration before dressing for the day.  Goodwill Industries of Alberta (Edmonton)’s Fall Fashion at Goodwill pinboard is one place I love to start! This outfit in particular is so on-trend with heeled booties and a wide-brimmed hat. I also love how this stylish gal has layered a lacey top under her snug sweater to add depth and texture. Check out the pinboard for more outfit ideas like this then head to Goodwill® for the pieces you need. Since sweaters and boots are always in vogue, Goodwill’s selection consists of donations of these fall favorites in different sizes, styles, and in every hue imaginable.

Now on to decor! If fall colors aren’t your thing, you can still decorate your home for the season by embracing a fresh take on autumn inspired by Janine of the blog Happy Happy Nester. She hunted down traditional harvest elements (like leaves and gourds) in light, almost spring-like colors. With barely any orange or brown in sight, her bright home beams with the beauty of fall without dark colors to drag it down. These sweet scallop-edged plates, for example, boast white, green, and gold colors and are straight off of Goodwill’s shelves. Since her blog post isn’t new this year you won’t be able to find the rest of the items she mentions at their original source, but you know where they might turn up, right? At Goodwill! Thrift stores are the very best place to look for the pieces you fell in love with, but never got to buy, last season. (By the way, if anyone spots those green velvet pumpkins, send them my way!)

If you, too, have decided to decorate with tiny pumpkins, the next step is deciding where they’ll go. Janine had them scattered all around several of her autumnal rooms so there are certainly plenty of options. Here’s another one that I love: pumpkins perched atop thrifted candlestick holders! Blogger Rashon Carraway shared a round-up of his favorite ways to style brass candlesticks and this option is just perfect for the fall season. These super versatile decor elements are both useful and beautiful as they add warmth both visually with their rich color and literally when lit. Plus, when this season ends you can pick another of Rashon’s styling tips to try out so the candlesticks can enhance your arrangements year-round.
And should you find that you want to clear out some old and unused fall decorations or layers while you’re adding in new pieces, don’t forget that when you donate to Goodwill, you help someone find a job, strengthen your community and preserve the planet. That ensures that while you start fresh for this new season, someone else gets to as well. Happy fall thrifting to all!
