DIY: Refurbished Cabinet

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

When I was making my usual Sunday Goodwill run I found this little cabinet.  My first thought was that it would make a really cute bathroom stand/cabinet.  It was a little beat up, but no major work needed done other than tightening it up and painting it.

Some of the screws were missing from the top,  which made some of the shelves fall out of the slates.  So the first thing I did was take it apart. Sometimes it is easier to start from the scratch.

Next I sanded everything to get the “shine” off of the wood. I didn’t want to use a primer because I wanted to be able to see the wood through the paint.

Time to decide on a color!  I don’t know if it just me, but when I think of bathrooms the first color that comes to mind is blue. So that is what I went with.

As I mentioned I wanted to paint a thin layer of paint so the wood would lightly show through. To do this I “dry brushed” the paint on. When you dry brush paint, put a very little amount of paint on your brush and basically rub it onto the piece you are painting.

I decided to do the outside of the cabinet in white with the inside blue.  I feel two-toned painted furniture adds a little more character to the piece.

Now it’s time to put it all back together. First up–the shelves. Once I had all the shelves in place I went ahead and put the screws back into the sides.

Next I attached the top. I wasn’t thrilled with the top having screws visible so I got out my handy hole filler. Another great item to always have on hand. I always make sure to get the one that you can stain, just in case. After I filled the holes, I waited an hour, sanded them and then painted.  What a difference!

The only thing left was touching up the edges on the shelves and of course the protective clear top coat. A new bathroom cabinet just like that!

Thank you for following along ~ until next month!
