MORE THAN 9,600 JOB SEEKERS ASSISTED BY GOODWILL IN 2008
AGENCY ACHIEVES ANOTHER RECORD-SETTING SERVICE YEAR

(Akron, Ohio) Looking for work and facing adversity are difficult obstacles, and valuable resources like those provided though Goodwill Industries of Akron, serving Summit, Portage, Medina, Ashland, and Richland Counties, helped to give 9,666 individuals a hand-up this past year. With the mission of helping individuals prepare for, find, and retain employment, the nonprofit agency provided a variety of services to individuals looking for a new or better job, or the opportunity to advance toward gainful employment.

Most known for assisting individuals that have disabilities and operating a well-established donation and resale operation, Goodwill is so much more. The agency has been in the business of meeting the needs of job seekers and extending those services to the entire population for 82 years. In 2007, the agency achieved a record service number of 6,291 individuals, but surpassed that figure by an unprecedented 53.6% in 2008. Although not everyone who receives services is seeking immediate job placement assistance, the agency boasts a placement rate of 80.0% for 2008. Also, its 81% retention rate for 2008 means that most of the 1,047 individuals Goodwill placed into jobs in 2008 were still on the job after 90 days, and it is probable that their employment will continue.

In 2008, Goodwill impacted the local economy as the value of the first year’s wages of individuals placed was almost $19.5 million – dollars that purchased food and services, and paid taxes in local communities. Beginning in 2006, Goodwill began more formally measuring its satisfaction level of participants receiving services, and in each of the last three years, it has achieved at least 93% participant satisfaction.

It is also important to note that Goodwill’s business lines, which include its Contract Services and Retail Operations, are the perfect training ground for many of the participants receiving services. More than 320 program participants worked within these business operations for a total of 111,188 hours gaining valuable skills, and more importantly, an enhanced feeling of confidence and self-worth to help them become more successful in relation to their employment goals.

Goodwill Industries would not have been able to achieve these record numbers without the support and encouragement from the public’s donations and its many referral sources and funding agencies including:

  • Summit County Department of Job and Family Services and County of Summit Board of MR/DD
  • Medina County Office of Workforce Development; Medina County Department of Job and Family Services; and several Medina County School Systems
  • Portage County Board of MR/DD; and Maplewood Career Center
  • Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, its Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, and its Bureau of Services for the Visually Impaired
  • Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services
  • Bureau of Worker’s Compensation
  • Veterans Health Administration
  • United Way of Summit County
  • Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board of Summit County, and its Community Support Services
  • Summit County Children Services; Akron Summit Community Action, Inc.; Babcock and Wilcox; The City of Stow; The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; and many other community partners

Goodwill will formally present these service numbers with the release of its 2008 Annual Report (contact Beth Galambos – 330.786.2567 – to receive your copy) at the agency’s 82nd Annual Meeting to be held on March 25, 2009, at The Civic Theatre in Akron beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Earth Day 2008

On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, millions of people around the world celebrated Earth Day. Locally, public radio station 91.3 The Summit hosted some green festivities at an "Earth Day 2008 Celebration," a family-friendly environmental awareness expo that was free and open the public. Goodwill Industries of Akron was an exhibitor at the expo, demonstrating how our agency is the ultimate recycler - taking in tons (literally!) of clothing, housewares, and other donations each year and selling them in our Retail Stores to fund our mission of helping individuals prepare for, find, and retain employment.

Goodwill & Climate Change

Recycling is a fundamental part of operations at Goodwill Industries of Akron. Founded on the notion that usable clothing and goods could be resold at affordable prices and the proceeds used for employment services, Goodwill, being a community source for those who wish to reuse and recycle, has been minimizing climate change since its inception.

  • In 2007, Goodwill sold, reused, or recycled 2,500 tons of donations.

  • Unsold clothing is salvaged for the creation of rugs and other textiles.

  • Metal, books, phonebooks, cardboard and electronics are recycled as well.

  • Hazardous wastes (i.e. light bulbs, paint, batteries and oxygen tanks) are disposed of using organizations recommended by Summit Akron Sold Waste Management Authority.

  • Cardboard boxes for storage and deliveries are reused as often as possible, before the cardboard is recycled.

  • Goodwill also limits greenhouse gases by keeping donations local. With sixteen convenient donation locations in a five-county area, donors do not have to travel far to deliver their donations or shop for reused goods.

  • The majority of donations stay at the store they were donated to, limiting the use of delivery trucks and packaging materials.

  • Most stores are located to enable individuals using public transportation to access them.
Shopgoodwill.com, Goodwill’s auction resale website, reuses cardboard boxes and newspapers for packing from the Service Center in Akron.

Recent efforts have been made to fight climate change in regards to office operations, educational and operational tactics.

  • Mailing lists are updated to limit the printing of unused materials.

  • Marketing materials are being tracked and re-evaluated to limit excess printing.

  • Paper recycle bin are in each workspace, and each printer/copier location, and clearly marked.

  • Used printing and copying toner cartridges are returned to manufacturers for recycling. The turning off of lights in vacant offices is practiced as well as turning off lights in offices when workers leave for the day.

  • The installation of automatic, energy-efficient toilets and sinks to limit water usage.

  • In-house cleaning crew uses the latest energy-efficient equipment to cut down on water usage as well as maintain better air quality.

  • All office lighting in the Service Center is the smallest, most energy-efficient florescent bulbs.

  • Thanks to the Portage Trail Sierra Club and Jennings Heating and Cooling Co., Inc., the installation of a web-based HVAC management system that switches the system to minimal usage at night when offices are vacant.
